I thought leaving would be easy. After all I'm cavalier; I'm the type of person who takes it all in stride. But god damn it they were perfect.
There are people in this world...people who know you better than yourself. People who surprise you at every turn. People you don't even know you'll miss until you're at the point where you shake their hand and give them a kiss on the cheek.
These are the best you'll ever meet... not some of the best, not maybe the best but *the best*. These are people whose companionship you count in decades, not years. These are people who have seen you at your best, and at your worst, and don't care either way.
It's not easy. Jesus... I thought it would be, but it's not. You people, you who have been through thick and thin, whom I've seen grow and marry, and have kids. You whom I've sat up with until god-knows-when and you whom have shared so much with me. I am indebted. I can't even begin to repay everything you've given me.
It's silly, I know that. It's silly to feel this way, and to think this way, and to be this way. It's not like the world is ending. But I'd be lying if I said that there wasn't some part of it, some significant piece of the world, that would never be the same. That's not a bad thing, not at all. But it's definitely different.
To every last one of you.... You're the best and I want you to know it. |

I've been refraining from posting because apparently this is #1,000. I wanted to make it super awesome, but waiting to make it super-awesome means I don't make it super-anything. So, instead, here's a picture of what my next week will look like:

So the GF's parents have a nasty, nasty computer bug. Svchost (actually svchost.exe, in /system32/ and everything) is being used as a spam relay or some other mechanism that requires approximately 100 connections to various computers worldwide at any given time.
Problem is, I can't find out where this damn thing is coming from. It's being spawned inside a legit svchost.exe process, but nothing looks suspicious. All its threads check out, and are similarly legit processes and services. Also, killing the svchost process (which eats memory until it bogs down the entire system) does solve the problem, but it restarts itself every 5 minutes or so.
Every other process looks legit, though I didn't go 100% inception into them.
I'm stumpped (so far, taking a physical look at it tomorrow). What virus spawns itself inside a legit-seeming svchost.exe file and eat memory until its 900 megs or more? And how does it keep restarting itself after I kill the offended svchost process? Barely any services are starting up and the ones that do are clean.
Seriously, via an .exe and a service - what other way is there to start a file?!
WinXP... lord knows what SP or update which is part of the problem.
This thing is beating me and that pisses me off. |

Good news for the orthopaedic doctor. Short version is I can start putting weight on it. It's fractured, but not "obliterated" as the ER doctor said. I have a stupid looking boot that I have to wear for the next 3 weeks, but other than that I can do whatever I would normally do, assuming I can.
So *phew* bullet dodged. We celebrated with milkshakes :) |
